Some of my crocatus seem to be fading in parts of there body. The animals seem fine, but some black parts just turn grey. Anyone else have these experienced?

Re: Crocatus faiding?

Fading of body-color in Neurergus is usually a sign of stress or illness. With the very warm weather we are having right now, chances are real that the discoloration you mention is a sign of stress caused by too high temperatures. I would advice keeping them terrestrial at a cool spot for now.

Well they are in the basement where it is nice and cool. Other keepers experience the faiding too while the newts are feeding well and are very active. This has led met to believe that it's new spots coming through.

Another option is that, especially if the fading occurs on the lateral sides, that it is a natural proces. While they grow, at least most ones from Irak, the yellow spots tend to enlarge and new spots occur. On the lateral sides, where the black meets the orange from the belly, black starts changing to yellow. Pictures would help to get a better impression.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
