My axolotl it about a year and a half old and I noticed chunks were taken out of his tail. He is by himself in the tank, no other fish or animals, and he seems healthy. Swimming and eating just fine, I'm just concerned about the health of his tail and that something may be wrong.

Is there anything in the tank the tail could be getting frayed on? Some place it could be getting caught in?

I have one that has frayed areas on the end of her tail, and they stayed even when she was in a bare tank. I will be interested in any ideas on causes other that physically getting it caught on something.

There actually was a pot in there that he may have gotten caught on swimming up for air. I removed the pot so hopefully it doesn't continue to deteriorate. Hopefully that's all it is, that would be a relief! I'm a first time owner and have had him for about 15 months and was scared I did something wrong.

If it is a clay pot with rough edges, that might do it. Clay pots sand smooth very easily with rough sand paper, if that is the problem.
