Okay so I have 6 Spanish ribbed newts living in a 100 gallon aquarium(4F,2M), and have been keeping this species of newt for about 4 years now. I have noticed recently with one of my younger males that he has these dark spots on his body that almost looks like shed. But when I gently rubbed over them to see if they would come off(I washed my hands don't worry) they didn't. The water parameters are all good and I haven't introduced any plants, fish, or snails into the tank in months. So I was wondering if anyone knew what this is? bad or okay? what causes it ? etc. I haven't seen this before, they does not look like when they normally shed their skin. There has been no changes in behavior or appetite.

Hey did you ever figure out what this was? My newts have had spots like this on and off . I’ve never noticed any out of place behavior. They seem pretty healthy and eat well. The spots come and go. I always figured it was from the black sand I keep them on and thought nothing of it but now im not too sure

I never figured it out unfortunately. It went away all on its own. I honestly think it might be their skin getting ready to shed. But mine are still healthy, have great appetite's, and their behavior is normal. So I don’t think it’s anything to worry about.
