Hi Everyone,
We (Dave & Kirsty) are relatively new to axolotls, we have had 1 black female (Medusa aka 'the duece') for about 6 months and have had a few hiccups allong the way, thanks to the help of www.axolotl.org we managed to straighten things out and now all is good we have recently aquired a second axie a light (almost white) olive male (Chuck Norris) and hope to eventually breed. One thing we have noticed is they have alot of character especially the little man. we almost lost medusa to a fungal infection but managed to save her with a series of salt baths i recomend this to anyone with the same problem. We still have gravel and are looking to switch to river rocks as soon as we have our other tank cycled to house our soon to be refugees. Nice to see there is a forum dedicated to such critters and its good to be on board. Here is a pic of our kids.

Until you get the other tank set up, I would just remove the gravel completely. While a bare-bottom tank isn't the most visually appealing, it's much less dangerous than keeping gravel in the tank.

Welcome to the forum, and good luck.

thanks for the advice, i have an undergravel filter, so id rather not remove the gravel at the moment due to a. the filter wouldnt really work with no gravel and b.removing the gravel at this stage would make a hell of a mess. i was thinking of maybe laying a layer of river rocks over the top of the gravel as a temporary solution, do u think that would work for the time being? Also is an undergravel filtratration system wise for axies ive seen alot of people dont use them. Thanks alot for your assistance.

Some people use under gravel filters and some people don't, its down to your personal choice.
The river rocks would have to be large enough so the axies can't move them and get to the gravel underneath.
Oh and welcome to the site.

Thanks both of you for all your help, i layed a layer of rather large river rocks some of which are larger than the axies so i doubt theres any threat of them being moved, your assistance is appreciated.
