Just found one of my 5 axolotls dead in the tank
She was just over a year old.

About 2 hours ago she was just fine, just doing her thing in the tank and looking great as always, except for 1 gill which got caught in a biting accident not too long ago but it was allready growing back.
30 minutes ago I wanted to feed them and she was on the bottom of the tank on her back :(
Can see nothing weird about her, looking just fine, can see nothing stuck in mouth or throat (could be only 1 thing really, a (small) Danio fish), bottom is sand, the stones are as big as the entire axolotl)
The water parameters and temperature (tank is chilled) are as stable as ever, nothing wrong there. The others are acting normal and can't see anything weird on them,

Any idea what could possibly have caused this?!?

bye girl :(

So sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, living creatures are pretty complex, and there is a lot that can go wrong. Sounds like you were doing everything right. Sometimes things just happen. Could have been a problem with her heart, circulatory system, brain, other internal organs, or could have been genetic. I lost a guinea pig that died suddenly at 9 months old. I suspect it was a problem with his heart, but I'll never know for sure. All my others have lived long healthy lives. You can take comfort knowing that she died quickly and didn't suffer, and that you gave her the best life you could while she was with you.

Like Rachel said, it sounds like you were doing everything right. If you really want an explanation, your best bet is to take her to a vet and see if they can examine her remains. Maybe then you'll get some answers; otherwise I'm not sure anyone here can offer anything definite.

She was a beautiful girl. Sorry for your loss :(

so sorry for your loss she was a beautiful girl xxxxxxx

Very sorry for your loss. At least you know it wasn't anything that you did wrong, and that she was happy while she lived. And you have that beautiful picture to remember her by, so you'll never forget her. -Seth
