Dead Golden Albino

Last night, just before going to sleep, I checked in on my axie tank... Only to find my gorgeous golden albino upsidedown on the bottom of the tank, clearly dead.

Can someone tell me why?!?!!

I had two.
One is a beautiful wildtype named Balthazaa I got from a GOOD lfs, and he's so healthy and happy all the time..
And that one was a golden albino named Fantasia that I got from a crappy lfs...

When i first got him, I posted a picture, because he had no gills. Assuming they were just axie snacks from the lfs, I let him be and assumed they'd grow back... Well, last night he died, and his gills looked the same as they always had. Problem is, I couldn't do anything to stop it, because I had no idea he was sick!! I was always checking him out and he always acted healthily and had no abnormalities about him. The couple of days before he died he had been alot more active than usual... I don't know why...

I checked the water last night and everything's as it always is, so nothing bad there...

I think I found the culprit, however.

The other day I put a piece of driftwood I had bought into the tank. Assuming it was totally secure, I let it be. It was totally secure for a few days, but according to my mum, she saw a snail fall down and hit the driftwood and it fell slightly to the side she said. I don't think this wouldve hit the axie, letalone KILLED it, but it could contribute... Because the water levels were all normal... Is it possible for the driftwood to have leached something bad into the water? It didnt seem to be and I washed it out before putting it in so that it wouldn't!! I need some help!!

I took it out immediately last night, and I checked on my other axie this morning and he's doing fine.

Oh, I should also add, I feed them once every day, Monday: half an earthworm each, Tuesday: 1 mealworm each, Wednesday: half an earthworm each and so on. They were both looking fat and healthy. The wildtype is about 15cm and the albino was about 18cm

PS: Did a 50% water change straight after I found the dead axie.
I've done 25% water changes every week since I got them.

Driftwood often leaches tannic acid into the water. Unless your axolotl is already ill, this should not affect them too much.

Mealworms can cause impaction in the gut, as their chitinous shell is hard to digest. It's hard to say what killed your axolotl.

Hmm... I assumed that it shouldn't havce effected them too much... But I'll stick to the earthworms in future. I've been feeding the little guy more earthworms than mealworms anyway just because mealworms give him a bit of a digestion problem... He has some floating issues.

Thanks... I'll keep up with the water changes just to be certain.
