Dead leafs in aquarium

I was wondering...all the natural water masses i´ve seen newts in had dead tree leafs in the bottom. Would it be a bad idea to put some in an aquarium??
I know they´ll rot and have to be removed eventually....but wouldn´t it make the water more similar to that in nature??
Maybe it´s just stupid....i was just thinking how good newts look like in natural ponds...and thought that if it´s hamrless it would be a very nice stetic thing to do...

I'd use same leaves (same species and same age) as found in nature. As long as the water is well oxygenated, rot shouldn't really be a problem in a 'natual' setting. What do you think?

Dead leaves will pollute water if not taken care of so it is probably not a good idea. When ever there are dead leaves in my aquariums from live plants they make the water turn yellow so I have to take them out immediately.

But yellow water ain´t bad...i´m not saying having a pile of rotting leaves is good....but maybe some are not bad. I think the water would be way more similar to nature. Like if you just took a piece of pond and put it in an aquarim hehe.

Correct, we tend to forget that most natural aquatic habitats are, to some extent, murky, and not crystal clear. However, increased cloudyness can sometimes indicate rotting/deteriorating water quality both in nature and in the aquaria. Smell can be a very useful indication, chemical test-kits can also help determine. I suppose personal preference and experience are the best judge.

I have seen people use natural dead tree leaves in aquariums, but it has to be done carefully. Plenty of airation and plenty of water changes. When the leaves begin to really decay, it could be difficult to clean out. So... it's possible, but could create more work for you.
