they probably just had a bowel movement and stepped on it, making it ”explode”

Oh ok, thank you, I was just wondering because this is the first time it pooped in a week

I think Axolotls seem to take great pleasure in tromping through their poop. If we don't catch ours and remove the poop and remove it within an hour or two, it inevitablely becomes a mess once they circle back around.

Yep, nothing to worry too much about. If you do see if coming OUT like this, I mean if they poop and it immediately explodes like this, you may need to change its diet a bit.
