Hi all,

Well I'm now the proud owner (parent) of a second Axolotl. He's a little Juvie so can't really sex yet but for some reason has the aura of a scamp so we've given him a male name.

We were going to go along the line of very plain British names to fit with "Fred" but my GF started calling him Barney on the Flintstones theme and it kind of stuck.

So I guess the two little fellas are now destined to be friends:

OK so he's about 3-4 inches long and is a wild type. No strange genetics from what i can see, he has shiny pigments, speckly skin, first set of limbs (all toes seam intact and all 6 gills, although centre left a little shorter than right). I suspect he's an absolutley normal wild type, exactly what I wanted.

I bought him from the aquatic shop that Fred originally came from, yesterday, as i had a call to say they had new stock. A very overcrowded tank full of very panicy axolotls so I'm glad he had a short spell there.

I've got him in the 60l tank Fred used to be in, which to this little fella is giant. Obviously he needed his own personality and aquascape so he's got his own little shipwreck to hide in and lots of grass and plants to play on.

To make things interesting I've piled up some small rocks (and will be piling up more) and also have 6 moss balls in the tank. These were in the tank before, I was using it to see if they would grow but Barney appears to like them, he moves them around and stands on them so I think I'll be getting Fred some (or giving him the larger). Just got to remember to leave the curtains open so they get some light.

He's already eaten, as was pretty tiny across the belly. Gave him a whole bloodworm cube and ate ever little bit.

Fred is interested in whats going on, and to make sure he didnt feel left out he had a full tank clean yesterday and i gave him a whole extra, extra-long worm. Usually he would have played with it for a while but he ate all 6-7 pieces before hitting the bottom of the tank. I can only assume showing off.

Its quite amazing the size difference, and can see why they couldn't be kept together. I've seen worms bigger than Barney.

Anyhow that's the background and now here are the pics.

As I'm sure you'd expect, I'll keep you updated with Barney's life over the next weeks, months and years :) (and I'm sure they'll be times I need your advice on making sure he's got the best possible life)

Hi all,

I've seen worms bigger than Barney.

Awh! That comment made me giggle. He's so sweet and has such lovely markings! Best of luck with him, I look forward to seeing more entries from the life of Barney! =]

I really love his color!

Thanks for the comments guys.

Yesterday I gave him his first experience of earthworms, start as we mean to go on.

He ate 2 small ones chopped into pieces. Just like his uncle Fred he did struggle on a bit that was too big, doing the whole kicking in the head business so when he finally spat it out I removed it. Still must have been lot more nutritious that nasty midge larvae.

He's a very energetic scamp at times, like he hasn't quite grown into his tail yet. One flick is enough power to sen him across the tank but at such speed he's tossing and turning, lol.

Fun times ahead.

He is beautiful...I love his colour as well. Congrats. Im sure he and fred are going to have many years of fun together.

some new pics of the scamp:

I think Barney is morphing, but not into a land going salamander but into a fish. lol

I know Juvies like a swim but Barney is literally always swimming, to the extend where I was worried he has having floating issues, but he doesn't he just loves a bit of exercise.

I have a glass thermometer in the top right of the tank, and Barney likes tapping it against the glass lol

Aww my axolotl boke my thermometer doing that

Barney's right at home now, he enjoys his tank and is constantly swimming.

He's very affectionate and when I'm near the tank will stand on his back legs and look right at me, it;s very strange to see as he's still very slim.

I've got him on Earthworms full time now and am gradually increasing the size of the pieces and the portion sizes. I dont want him getting fat as all the swimming is doing him good, but i do want him to increase in size so that he can go in with Fred.

As on this thread: http://www.caudata.org/forum/f46-be...ubstrate/71451-how-create-java-moss-wall.html I created a Java Moss wall in his tank.

Hopefully by the time he leaves it, the wall will have developed for it's next inhabitants, the Red Cherry Shrimp.

I have a surprise for both Fred and Barney tonight, but won't give the game away....

Nice video and he's super cute :D but is it me or do his eyes more quite abit , Iv never seen an axolotl's eyes move like that before not even my axolotl's ... I don't know if its just me but just a thought :p... Can't wait to see your axies together :D

to be honest his eyes move less than Freds does when he eats.

Sometimes Freds get sucked right into his head lol.

He's about 6 inches I recon,

He sure is a cute one, here's some pics I got of him earlier:

Barney is doing well, getting bigger but slowly.

He barely even touches down which is probably how he maintains his size despite what he eats, he just really seem to love swimming.

I'd say the water to ground ratio is 9:1, he's a fish.

After consulting with Ted I've stopped chopping up the worms and have started to feed barney daily to get his size up.

His slightly shorter gill has grown back fully now, he's just generally a very happy axie and spends some time peering in at Fred hoping to meet him. Soon buddy, soon.
Here's some updated photos:

Aww I love that video. It's always cute to see their eyes sink in their heads when they swallow food :) (And I also like how they spit out sand)

And again: I still like his color :D

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
