Disinfecting live plants

I think I can guess the answer..but I'll put the question out there anyway.

I have some plants in an aquarium that has had disease. The plants are great and healthy..but the disease is nasty.I certainly don't want it to spread. Is there any fool proof way to disinfect the plants..or are they bound for the bin?

I'm leaning towards disposal.

Hi Gord,

This is a hard question to answer unless we have an idea of what you are trying to prevent with the disinfection. For example while a bleach solution will work for a number of pathogens, it won't do anything with some coccidia or mycobaterium.

It was a disease I'v never seen before.Struck my new paddletails.Symptoms were patchy shedding, slime and then bumps on the skin followed by death. Not nice.I have one that is hanging on..but the two others died quickly. The shop lost almost all the newts they brought in to the same disease.

Hi Gord,

If it was that virulent then you would be better off discarding anything like the plants.

Agreed. Last patchy died today.I've never seen a disease move so quickly.

Some serious disinfection tomorrow.
