My axolotl recently shows what appears to be a dislocated/backwards L leg. It appears fully functional, but compared to the R, faces towards the head. This makes him swim in circles and he is body is constantly flexed to the R. I have no clue how this could have resulted, but if anyone has any advice/experiences or if I can provide more info to help, let me know! Thanks a lot!

Hi Scarley,

Will you be able to put up some photos? Has this condition existed right from the start when you first acquired the axie or developed over a period of time? Has the leg been injured or amputated anytime before in the past?

If the axie got the condition since young, it could be a congenital defect. If there was a previous injury to the site, it could be regeneration that didn't go perfectly well. If the limb was normal to start with and then slowly became deformed, i would suspect a metabolic or particular fungal infection problem that can affect the cartilage and bone growth.

Fractures and dislocation at the hip joint will be unlikely. There will be associated inflammation and the limb would not be able to move at all in that situation.

Cheers.

Hi sacrley

I have a 4 year old adult female who has had a similar affliction which appeared about 15 months ago. At first I tried to gently manipulate it back into place and this worked for a while but it kept happening. I kept a close eye on it for about two months and some times the limb (right front) would be functioning normally and sometimes it would lie flat against her body. In the long run it doesn't bother her or inhibit her chasing food or moving around the tank.

It does make for a slightly weird looking swimming motion but thats about the only ill effect that I have noticed. We didn't have the benefit of Raysons knowledge and experience on the site when it happened and no one could offer any concrete sollutions so I just monitored her and left it. Periodically if she is being particularly active I gently manipulate it back into place and she swims normally until it pops out again.

I hope this helps Good Luck
