JYLLANDS-POSTEN (Viby, Denmark) 05 August 08 Dead frog delivery
The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is calling on the public to donate some unusual items for research.
The Veterinarian Institute at DTU is conducting new research on two fatal illnesses that could be attacking amphibians in Denmark. They are asking to public to send any dead frogs, toads or salamanders they find to the institute.
Amphibians can fall prey to the Rana virus and the Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis fungus that is mostly found in South America, Australia and Asia.
The virus and fungus have now reached Europe and researchers want to find out if Danish amphibians are being affected.
They are asking the public to pop any dead frogs, toads or salamanders that they find in a plastic bag and freeze them.
It is not dangerous to touch the creature as neither the fungus nor the virus can spread to humans, reports Ingeniøren newspaper.
The finders should then visit the ranavirus.net website and fill out a questionnaire under the Survey heading. A researcher from DTU will get back to respondents within a week.
