Do axolotls like clutter?

Someone told me my 20g low is too cluttered for my one axolot to move about. Which I said he was wrong. He moves about quite fine and I see him walking around and more active at night. Besides the little activity he has always done, he doesn't move much regardless of what i have in there. (Light only on for show).

I think a bit of clutter is good for them, keeps them sharp. Your tank doesn't too cluttered at all.

Having said that, I know some axolotls like a good "walking path": a long, straight, unobstructed line to go for a hike.
You could move the stone near the front of the tank somewhere else, so you have a straight line at the front glass; see if the axolotl uses that area as a highway or not.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
