I'm new to this, i got two juvenile axolotls. lately my albino has been swimming around the tank more than she ever did before. once in a while she'll go up to the top for air. the other one just hangs out on the bottom once and a great while he'll go up to the top but not as often as her. i wonder if i need an aerator besides the top filter.

Mine sometimes swims a lot. He can have some lazy days but he seems to get bursts of energy and swims around for a good few hours. He's more active at night and very early morning.

Some axolotls swim more than others. I have lazy ones, and I have marathon runners. Coming up for air is completely normal.

Juveniles are more active than adults.

Do you test your water parameters? How warm is your tank?

all of my water parameters are fine, but my temperature is holding steady at 22 degrees celsius. i was thinking of cooling my water down a couple of degrees. I've been researching different websites and forums. i do believe my water temp is a hair high :(

It's not terrible, but if you can maintain a cooler temp, that would probably bring the activity level down.

juvies will swim more, hence they also eat more and are generally more active.

my adults do pretty much nothing. it's not unusual for mine to not move all day.

Mine used to be really active, i have never seen him up the top though. He more or less just walks on the bottom now. Comes out of his hide if he thinks food is involved.

I current have 9 six month old juveniles all over 8 inches long & they are very active & like to swim the full length of the 6ft tank. Today we had a water change & a plant rearrange & they are going mad exploring tonight :)
Some will even swim up the 2.5ft to come bite my wiggly finger hoping for a worm :D

If they're eating & pooping there's not a lot of need for worry :)

It's understandable as a new parent to be watching everything they do & of course they don't all do the same things, they've all got their own personalities & quirks! :D
