Hi,

I've been looking to buy some axolotls, I had some when I was a teenager and was telling my youngest about my favourite, "Blackie" who lived for a good few years with me till I had to foster him out when I left school and went off to work.
We were looking at them on you tube after seeing some at the Sealife centre in Montpellier and came across some clips of the flourescent green protien ones. These are what Charlotte fancies but I can't find anyone who breeds or sells them in Europe and the one guy I found, who I thought was in Hamburg but now think was American doesn't export. Are they illegal in Europe due to being genetically modified? Does anyone know of a source for some eggs in Europe?

Thanks JockMcFrog

The EU has very strict laws on GMOs, and each new modified organism needs to o through a lengthy approval procedure before ever making it out of a secure lab. So far as I can find, there are currently only a few plants and micro-organisms on the approved list.

The European Food Standards Authority website states 'Currently, no GM animals or derived products are on the EU market,' which certainly appears to apply to non-food animals as well.

In fact, it appears that currently genetically modified amphibians couldn't possibly be approved, as the EU has only even drafted guidelines for the approval of mammals, birds, fish and insects.

So, got some good news. A guy down near us in France has a batch of Harlequin (clown face) Axolotls. We have reserved two and should get them in May.
