I've only had my axie for a couple of months but the last couple of days I've noticed that one of his gills is white towards the tip it hasn't gotten any worse but I'm wondering if it is fungus or if he injured it somehow or if it is nothing. He is in the tank by himself so he didn't get bitten. The ammonia level is 0 nitrite is 0 and nitrate is 20. The temperature fluctuates between 64-66 F.

Hi TJ and welcome to the forum.

I've had a close look at the picture and I'm not sure if it is fungus or not. I've put a couple of links in to health articles, which may be of some help.
Axolotls - Health & Diseases
Caudata Culture Articles - Illness Part 1

I have only been keeping axolotls for around 2 months, so if I were you I would keep yours comfortable in excellent water conditions and wait for one of the more experienced keepers to offer advice.
Sorry I can't be of more help than that.

I have seen that in young Axies. That is an early sign, they can either get fungus or fight it off. So just observe, luckily fungus on the gills is not a fast acting problem. Sometimes at that age they can fight it off. So if it gets bigger within a few days, yes go on treatment right away. Isolate the axie to a sick tub. Fridging is not necessary.

When they are young the salt baths do hurt. So avoid multiple salt baths. Another alternative is Indian almond leaves. Also API erthomycin which is sold at pet stores does work for fungus but requires a week at least to work.

Otherwise if it does goes away then your axie has good immunity and health.

Thank you both for the replies. I definitely want to avoid the salt bath if I can. I guess in the mean time I'll just keep an eye on it, keep his ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels in check and maybe try some Indian almond leaves in a couple of days if it doesn't get better by then. Thank you both again  any idea how long before it does get better?
