I saw a post on here somewhere and put a reply to it, but cannot find it. So I read shrimps can go with newts but may (probably will) get eaten.

I have just bought a load of red cherry shrimp. Someone local to me is selling them at 2 pence each. I dont know how many I got, but I gave him a fiver. I have loads of baby shrimp. Too small yet to go in the newt tank, but I will end up putting them in there. He also gave me a big handful of java moss out of the shrimp tank. And a load of pest snails. I actually asked for the snails. lol. They are food for the blue lobsters (crayfish). I have put a load in their tank already and there are loads of snails in the moss in the shrimp bowl. I am going to let the shrimp grow to adut size and breed before I put some in with the newts.
He also gave me some duck weed. I think it is duck weed. Is it ok in the newt tank.
I have put a big clump of java moss in with the newts and there will be a load of snails in there. I am not bothered about the snails as they will grow, breed and become lobster food.
I think for the amount of moss I have and the amount of shrimp (pity no adults), I think I got a bargain.

Hi duck weed is fine with newts, i personally would be worried about the crayfish getting my newts if i where you. Most people don't like duck weed it can tack over a aquarium, some people buy it. I pay $17 for 10+ cherry shrimp but that's with shipping.

I have a love/hate relationship with duckweed as I think everyone who has it does. I have loads of it in my newt and shrimp tanks, it helps use up the nitrates like nobodies business but it gets EVERYWHERE, my sink and floor always has some on it no matter how well I think I cleaned. When it takes over more than I want, the extra gets scooped up and fed to the chickens. They love it.

Same here, I recently had to tear down two of my tanks and re start them so I had the chance to eradicate the Duckweed completely. In the end though, I decided to keep some because as you say, it's very good at removing waste nitrates from the water.
Now the tanks are cycled and full of newts we're back to having it everywhere again, even my dog seems to have some stuck to him most of the time!

Newts are in their own tank and crayfish are in their own tank. I wouldnt put newts in with crayfish as newts are slow and crayfish would have no trouble catching them. The crayfish have a molly now and again but with two male mollies and the rest all female, there will be a few pregnant ones ready to drop more soon.

In my opinion i would stay away from duckweed.. It is a great plant for the newts and because it removes waste nitrates from the water but but it literally covers the whole aquarium. I tried it a few months ago and regret it. It is called the herpes of plants for a reason. I tried eradicating it from my aquarium but somehow it starts right back up again.

Shrimp on the other hand are great though. I use ghost shrimp and some cherry shrimp.. The newts do sometimes eat them but the shrimp are great bottom feeders for the food that the newts don't eat.

I would also stay away from the regular crayfish but I have used a Louisianan breed of crayfish that are pretty cool. They stay about 1.5-2 inches long so they aren't really a threat to the newts and as long as you keep your newts fed they wont mess with them at least mine haven't.
