2 dwarf sirens were rehomed to me a couple weeks ago and they are currently in a quarantine bin. For their permanent tank I've set up a 20 gallon long tank with driftwood & magnolia leaves and the plants are java fern, vallisneria, water lettuce, and some stray duckweed that found its way into the tank. There is a sponge filter as well, but the water is pretty still as I have the air pump turned down pretty low. The tank has effectively become a blackwater tank and I'm wondering if that's okay for these guys. If not I can remove a lot of the magnolia leaves because they really do produce a LOT of tannins. From everything I'm reading it looks like they prefer softer water, though, so I would think a blackwater tank would be ideal? What do you all think? Would they do well in a blackwater tank?

No one replied to this so I thought I'd let you all know how it went. The sirens acclimated to the blackwater tank quite well. They have been in the tank since last week and there haven't been any issues. The water isn't *as* blackwater as it was when the tank was cycling, because I did a few water changes to get rid of some biofilm. But the water is still a nice yellow from the remaining tannins.

The sirens really enjoy the leaf litter and they are hiding in the leaves pretty much 100% of the time.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
