Last year my axolottles laid plenty of eggs that all developed well. However they failed to break free from their eggs and after finally trying to release them opening them up with a scalpel they span round in circles for a few days before dying. I suspect that this may have been caused by a lack of minerals on the water as I had moved six months previously into a soft water area. I am currently experimenting with adding minerals and salts to the water. Has anyone come across this before?

If your consistently getting failed batches it may be down to the breeding pair, one or both may be responsible. Heat can also kill eggs off. I know a few people who use water hardners with axolotls but people who live in softer water areas don't seem to report probs with breeding
