Feeding amount/times

Ok in another one of my threads I've been told all types of things on feeding. What should I do, I have a 5 inch juvi. I currently feed him in the morning and at night. Each time I feed him it is a red wiggler (small earthworm maybe 2 inches long and real thin) I also normally cut the head part off of the worms (seems to make him eat them better). And occasionally (2-3 times a week) I feed him a waxworm that is cut in half (I feed the bottom half). He eats it all good, and if I don't do a feeding he will be swimming around looking for food all day, even in the middle of the day if he isn't fed in the morning but he is fed at night. But, I know they are nocturnal so what do I do?

I think that once a day is plenty. If you miss a day here or there, that is not going to be a problem either. Worms are fine.

Cutting off the head of an earthworm doesn't make them wriggle any less. In fact, cutting them just makes them move more. And it's a waste of good worm.

Well he won't eat them if I dont he just chews them real fast then spits them out. And it does make them wiggle more but then they die shortly after. Maybe it won't work for your axies but it does for mine. : )

Grant - I have 3 axolotls about the same size as yours (close to 5"). I am still feeding them twice a day. They each get a small earth worm in the morning and either another small earth worm at night or the axolotl pellets from Indiana University.

Once they get to 6" I start feeding them once a day. At 7" I feed them every other day to once every 3 days.

My 8 - 9 inch axolotls (yearlings) are eating 2-3 small earth worms each every two to three days.

Your milage may vary. Not all axolotls eat as much or as often as others. They may be opportunistic eaters but I find mine will refuse food when they are not hungry.

Ok your feeding sounds about the same as mine. On axolotl sites I have read that I should feed them how I am now, and reduce food as they get older and less active. Well thanks a lot Cynthia.
