Hi I have an axolotl and i feed them roughly 3 earthworms every 2 days.
I feed earthworms just from my garden as I feel this is more humane way of getting worms but I always feel bad feeding them live but i face the problem of how do you quickly kill an earthworm??
is feeding live the quickest way to kill it? do worms suffer/feel pain?Is it humane?
thank you any comments appreciated:)

i really think feeding live is best. my axolotls won’t strike unless it’s a moving object, and will spit out anything that is not moving. to kill a worm quickly, i’d suggest blanching it

One thing to be careful of when catching worms in the wild is whether you or your neighbors are using any kinds of pesticides or fertilizers. The worms eat/absorb those, and you don't want them in your tank or in your axolotl.

I've read that worms don't really have pain receptors in the same way that we do, so while they definitely know that something is wrong, they apparently don't really feel pain.

make sure to quarantine worms, it's quite dangerous to feed them straight from the garden. as said above, worms do not actually have pain receptors, they do not feel pain. if you really want to kill them then temperature shock or blanch them, some axolotls will not eat if its not alive though

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
