I got a pair of fire belly newt today off course it was new and when i got home i placed them in their enclosure and the female i noticed was shedding and trying to climb my glass and when i falls to water it swims on top only and seems to be scared of water , she tends to cling to plants only? What wrong with my new newt?

Where the newts aquatic when you purchased them ? Have you provided an island and lots of plants for them too?

This is very typical of new imports. The terrible conditions and the stress that they suffer pushes them to become terrestrial to scape the worst of it. In order to have a chance to go back to a fully aquatic life they require optimal water conditions (this includes dense matts of vegetation near the surface for safety and easy surface access) and a stress-free environment.

It was in the water when i bought her , the shop allowed me to choose so i picked a male and female and she was the only one not swimming the male was all she does was to cling onto fake plants above the water. i made the water lower so that she doesnt have to have hard time swimming , she would accept clinging to rocks but water is not.

Should i place her in a terrestrial habitat , or you mean put lots of live plants with water.

LOTS of plants in the water. Really, LOTS. Dense vegetation makes them feel secure in the water and will prevent drowning (which is a possibility when one of these newts is not comfortable in the water).
I wouldn´t reduce the volume of water as this will make maintaining optimal conditions much harder. The ridiculous amounts of plants are the trick to stop the female from freaking out and clinging to stuff.

Will plastic plants bent over be fine?

They could work but i would highly recommend live plants. They will go a very long way in maintaining optimal conditions for the newts.

just wondering what caused these?? in the shop they are under the water and now its not kinda weird? was fine in the pet store

It could just be general stress. After the hell they´ve been through, maybe the new change into your home just triggered another stress response. It´s also very likely that conditions in your tank are not optimal. Once they are very stressed they become very highly sensitive to water quality and temperature.

Oh my goodness Jerome I am shocked you went & bought more pets when you are barely coping with being able to look after the axolotls in your care!

How you can suddenly have money to spend on more animals when you could not afford a freshwater test kit & it was sent to you for FREE! We've been asking you to get a thermometer for your axolotl tank & you respond with excuses such as they are illegal - we asked you to get a digital one & you never responded :(

Newts are difficult to look after especially in the tropical country you are in & you've obviously jumped right in and bought some without doing proper research!

Plastic plants offer nothing to help the water quality! You removed these plastic plants from your axolotls tank because you suspected they caused an injury - yet now you'll happily put them in with these newts? :(

Are these newts expected to live in a tank thats kept outside with your axolotl tank? Are you going to have trouble keeping them cool in summer?

I am so disappointed in you Jerome & I wish you would look after the animals you have already properly - rather than going out & buying more animals!!! :(

That´s all very disappointing to hear....

I got thermometer it was 10-15 degrees, And also i used the test kit and the fbn was given to me only , and i dont mix my newts with my axies ! I know how to care for those newts , i already have one last time with me hes about a year old , and i just received new ones!!! And they have settled in the tank finally and was accepting to swim down the water!! And also you just dont know how hard it is to find live plants here!!! Im killing myself do find a live plant!
Lol and also i have a brain!!! I dont mix fbn with axolotls!!
Nitrite and ammonia - 0
ph-7.2
Nitrate - 10
Temp is - 10-15 degrees ( i got ice bottles in their tanks), Rodrigo they finally stopped being scared of the water , they accepted to dive in and dive out , but still they keep standing on the plants , only its heard was raised !! Finally Thanks for all your help!
Im just waiting for them to eat some mosquito larvae and live tubifex worms.

I can't believe that the shop "gave" you two of these animals!

I never mentioned being worried you were going to put the newts with your axolotls - I'm just concerned you don't look after your axolotls very well to start with so why add more animals (in yet another tank that you will have to cycle & maintain) when you are not coping with the ones you already have!

As for I've bottles in the tank - how often are you changing these? Are you still keeping your tank outside? What are you going to do when the weather warms up more in summer?

We are not stupid either & it's very frustrating to know what your axolotls go through & the problems you constantly experience. Now you're adding more pets to the work you have to do! We have brains too & see this ending in more problems >_<

You've kept these newts before??
- yet it died after a very short period of time :(

Do you really know about them & how long they should live (up to 30yrs 10-15yrs average) & what they should eat? Mosquito larvae have risks of parasites & tubifex worms are generally not recommended in the forums as there are better foods for these newts.

Changing the bottles every 2 hours
here's the reason why its floating!! the pet shop's water has problem too high ammonia!

What water did you test? How can it be the pets shops water when you've had them home already for a couple of days? If that is the ammonia levels in your tank - that is awfully high - no wonder it doesn't want to go into the water!

So you change the bottles every 2hrs - what do you do when you're at school or asleep?
