Can you please advise if my newts (which have 4 legs and external gills) need land right now? I have them in an aquarium with plants and rocks but nowhere they can get out of the water.
also, will newts in this stage try to escape the aquarium? I have a cover but haven’t used it because I wasn’t sure when they will be ready to try to escape.

They seem to be still in the aquatic phase. When they are ready for the next step, their gills will get smaller and finally totally disappear. Also the body shape changes, they start to look like a miniature adults. In this phase, they will climb the walls and search for some land. It would be safer to have the lid already there or keep a good eye on them and look when the changes start to appear. You could add a cork bar or something else floating as an island, so they could climb there when the time is right. They can also hang on the plants for a while but there is a possibility of drowning if there's no land available when needed.

Thank you! I will follow your instructions.
Since I postered last they are both climbing on the plants now so they might need land soon. We’ll get some in there and put the cover on soon as well
