First baby axie

I've recently gotten a baby axolotl from my local pet store. He/she is about 2 1/2 inches long, in a 5 gallon tank for now, and eating great. I've done my research and asked friends who have kept axolotls before, and I know that gravel in an axis tank is a death sentence. I was wondering if the super fine "riverbed sand" would be safe for him.

You can use fine sand once it gets to about 5 inches.
