Ok. I'm getting a 29 gallon tank soon, and I hope to move my fish into it. I've done some research on Axies and hope to get two of them, but before I do any ordering I'd like to find out the compatibility to the fish I already have.
1 Dinosaur Bichir
1 Plecostamus
2 Red tailed Platies
2 Giant danios
1 Rainbow shark
1 Opaline Gourami
1 Mini crab (I'm pretty sure he's a bad idea to have with axies)
1 Ghost catfish
If the fish are compatible, I'm debating the type of filter to use, I was hoping an undergravel filter would work. I don't have any experience with any amphibians, only reptiles and fish. I'd appreciate any help/advice you could give.

None of those fish are compatible with your axolotl. The bichir, pleco, and possibly the rainbow shark are likely to attack the axolotls, and the axolotls are likely to eat the platies and ghost cats, but more importantly axolotls need cool water and those fish need warm water. You will need two tanks.

Darn. I was hoping it wouldn't be like that >.<
I could care less about the Axie eating the fish, but with the Bichir and Pleco being so big and agressive...... I could get rid of the fish... Is there a list anywhere of compatibles? All I've heard so far is Guppies.

The only really good fish to be kept with axolotls that are commonly available are white cloud mountain minnows and guppies. The majority of fish in the trade are tropical and have completely different environmental requirements.

I'd have to agree that the bichir is going to be too aggressive to house with an axolotl. Plecostomus and rainbow sharks are also often problems. The common plecostomus also gets far too large for a 29 gallon aquarium.

do NOT get white cloud minnows with axies. Being such a small greedy fish, they will nibble the axo's gills and cause them bad stress leading to death.

A good option is to mix fncy goldfish with them like me. I have 1 black moore, 1 black ranchu, and 2 fantails with my 2 axolotyls, and they been doin great together fo 3 months!?

So yeah, i reccomend fancy goldfish over the normal ones since fancies are alot slower and 'calm'

Goldfish are NOT a good choice for tank mates. Not only are they known to bite the axolotls gills (you're lucky so far, Kriltex) but they also add an awful lot of waste to the tank.

Comets and Kois, yeah i can agree that they will always try to nibble the axolotyls. But with the fancies, i have not seen any harassment from the goldfish. Yeah they produce alot of waste, i agree! Depends on how regularly u clean the tank

Goldfish of any kind and breed are NOT suitable for an axolotl tank.
In the same way that you report white cloud minnows harassing axolotls despite most people´s experience being that they don´t...the fact that your fancies have not YET harassed your axies means nothing.

Also, even with frequent water changes and a cycled tank, the urine of the fish is constantly stressing the axies. Plus they can "feel" the fish in the water which adds to the stress.

But with the fancies, i have not seen any harassment from the goldfish.

Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I've never seen a bear poop in the woods, but they do. The people here are speaking from years of experience. You may have gotten lucky these past 3 months but sooner or later, and it will happen, the goldfish are going to cause a problem.

easy easy, dont hate lol. I personally think its fine to keep them together.. and no i dont watch them 24/7 but i do not see any signs of stress.. all their pink fluffy gills are in tact... sooooooo :p. Maybe u gotta just look closer in them woods and u will see that bear pooping. Good luck!

Hi Kriltex,

This is a friendly forum and ideas are opinions are exchanged in a civil manner. A lot of beginners look through this forum as a resource to do their research before getting an axolotl. The experienced hobbyists and breeders here are generously sharing their tips they accrued over years from practical hands-on experience. Please do not dismiss, slight or patronise their valid and invaluable input. You do owe an apology.

Goldfish are not suitable tank mates for axies and are definitely not superior to minnows in any way as feeder fish.

1) They are fatty in composition and can cause hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver) when fed to axies.
2) They do contain thiaminase and can cause thiamine deficiency if fed to axies excessively.
3) They are carriers for many types of parasites and bacteria which can cross infect axies.
4) They are high waste producers, much more so compared to minnows.
5) Their natural mode of feeding involves a lot of 'nibbling' which an inevitably lead to axie's gills and skin being damaged.

Cheers.

Four fancy goldfish are going to get quite large if provided with an appropriate aquarium and care. They will easily get 4-6" long quite quickly. The amount of waste a fish produces is related to its volume and goldfish, while short, are big, globular fish. They take up a huge amount of volume and produce a large amount of waste. A general low to average requirement for goldfish is one fish per 30 gallons of water. Keeping that many goldfish would require a really large tank even without an axolotl if you wanted to keep the animals healthy. You can keep them in smaller aquariums and stunt their growth but this shortens their lifespan drastically and makes them prone to infection.

Plus there are all the other reasons listed above.

There is a sticky on this topic...

Man, that seems really familiar.

Best thing to keep with an Axie?....

...If anything, another Axie. Same size. Very nice!

I kept my axie with one goldfish (tallulah) and she absolutely battered poor ron. Plus, they are dirty, amonia producing animals which cause havoc in the water chemistry.
