my axolotl pinky is sick she is floating at the top of the tank almost all the time and she wont eat and is very thin -looking gaunt- she is not her usual bright colour. i have put her in the fridge for 2 days but she doesn't seem to be picking up. we are doing a tank clean today and changing from gravel to sand. can anyone help my sweetie?

mine stopped eating, and started floating... it died this afternoon. so dont ask me

Likely blocked up with gravel, but other things to take into consideration: ammonia, nitrIte, and nitrAte levels? What kind, size, etc. of filtration? What have you been feeding her?

we are using an eco filter as well as a air stone. the tank is @120cm x 40cm. i feed them turtle dinner and beef heart. pinky has a mate in the tank and he is doing fine. we are fairly new to this so we didnt know about nitrate levels will have to go buy a test kit. the ph was a bit high but with the change of water we are monitoring this. i heard a big change in ph levels can be dangerous what is the recommended changes in levels?

And tank temperature. Its meant to hit 40 degrees out in WA today, so keep her cool in the fridge.

remember she will eat far less in the fridge because her metabolism will slow right down.

Keep up with water changes for the container she's in from the fridge and make sure the water you use to change is the same temp.

And mathew - sorry bout your loss. Know how you feel losing one.

and make sure you don't kill off all the good bacteria in your tank when you clean it!

im sorry mabey no one has ever explained this to you but when something DIES, it stops requiring sustinance, i dunno, is this making sense to you or?

mathew sorry for your lose, but i'm not sure what you mean.? pinky is still alive moving pooing etc what does and axol look like when dead-stupid question? maybe, but when she was floating the first time i thought she was dead but she is still moving about so????

the ones with the drops. not the little bits of paper- these are not as accurate.

to mathew- i think charles comment was to jacinda as she was going to be cleaning out her tank, i know typed words can be taken several ways but it sounded a teeny bit rude, he was only trying to help jacinda

jacinda when you change the substrate dont change any of the water at all, nor the filters. just change the substrate, since this is where alot of your bacteria will be cutting down on feeding for a bit till the bacteria re-populates could be a good idea. you dont want an ammonia spike! axies often float due to heat stress as well- maybe that could be a factor? either way i hope she makes a speedy recovery

ummm what is a substrate??? duh feeling realy dumb at the min.

Thanx to all for your help have been reading a lot of threads to find out what to do.
This site rocks!!

substrate= what you put on the bottom ie gravel (big no no for axies!!), sand (we LOVE sand) etc etc. the bacteria loves to live in this cuz it has so much surface area so you have to be careful when doing tank over-hauls.

right ok gotcha. we have just put sand in we did have gravel but after learning about it more on this site we changed it immediatly. pinky is still not well she has pooed but no gravel i hope she will be ok

Hope she's pulling thru.
And mathew - I was trying to help jacinda.

help have 4 axies and they are about 8 months old have all just started to float and are not eating. have had a few warm days.... any suggestions as im quite new to this

ahhh another aussie, that damn heat aye!!

probably floating due to heat stress so if you can get them into a large esky it would be cool. also placing them in containers in a cooler part of the house (basement if you have one etc) would also work. however in small containers you need to change all of the water daily with fresh, dechlorinated water because small bodies of water foul quicker.

if none of them are accessable put them in individual containers in the fridge. put enough tank water in to cover them and add the axies, lid on, wrap in a towel (to stop them going mental when you open the fridge= light on). you will need to keep enough water in bottles/containers in the fridge to change all of their water as it needs to be the same temp. as long as your fridge is above 5C it will be ok.

also check your water parameters just incase they are the cause.

hope this helped

its unusual another aussie because it should only be the northern tropical areas of australia that should be having this terrible heat not the southern states but in cairns at the moment we just have this horrible humidity. does everyone know that a pet shop in nth gosford, nsw are selling aqua one chillers for about $570 delivered anywere in australia if you join, i bought one as did another forum member and it was the best investment that i ever made. this is the website address, http://www.aquaticlifeaquariums.com.au/ maybe this would help with floating axies
