Fluval Filter - stuck tail

I've used Fluval submersible filters for years in my large aquatic tanks. Last week I had my first problem - a newt got it's tail jammed in one of the intake slits (it must have backed itself into it). The more it struggled, the more stuck it became and quickly had half it's tail in the filter. Fortunately I managed to get it out with only minor damage but I think the newt would have done significant damage left to struggle on it's own. Anyone else experienced this?

I typically use the Fluval canisters and have not had this problem. I do keep the intake baskets on at all times though so they cannot get to close to the impeller.

In my temporary tank I have a Whisper hang on filter and one of my Granulosa's regularly (once a week) wraps his tail around the intake strainer and flaps on the outflow current of the filter. It looks like the dogs tongue when he holds his head outside the window of a moving car. I'll try to get a pic next time as it is something to see.

you can get rid of that problem by taking a hot glue gun and gluing thin foam rubber around the intake,(be careful not to clog the slits) i use hot glue because its non toxic. the foam will provide extra filtration and keep your amphibian friends safe.

maybe wrap a small piece of pantyhose around it with a rubber band?

i generally wrap tights around the intake. this also helps to stop the filter clogging up with plant debris etc

i have a fluval with a mudpuppy (soon) so I dont think I need to worry about his/her tail getting stuck, sorry about your newt

would this happen to an Axolotl at all? I have a fluval filter in my tank and I'm hoping to get an axolotl soon, but what happend to your newt sounds rather worrying.

It shouldnt - most axys are a lot "meatier" than newts.
I have been using fluvals since day dot and have never had a problem
