Hi guys,

My 3-4 yr old axolotl, Millie, has recently taken a turn for the worse. She started looking pretty impacted a little while ago and it was not resolving on its own so I started fridging her. She has been in the fridge for about a week now. While the bloating has gone down a bit, she is still pretty bloated and has trouble moving around, even in the quarantine tank. She also has injuries on her tail and legs, and her gills are extremely short. I'm assuming the injuries are from her limited mobility while in the main tank but I'm not sure why her gills are so short. She also has some pink inflammation under her tail that looks to me like she may be trying to produce but unable.

She has not been eating for about a week and a half, possibly a bit longer but she has been in the fridge for a week. I have been doing 100% daily water changes using Prime as the dechlorinator. I have put some small Indian almond leaves in the tank to help soothe her cuts. The temperature is around 41 degrees Fahrenheit. I have been keeping the fresh water for the water changes in the fridge as well so that there is no temperature shock. I have been doing this for about a week but her cuts and gills are looking the exact same. :( I just started salt baths today since I noticed what looks like some signs of infection but she has only had one so far.

I was wondering if anyone has had this problem as well and what they did to fix it?

**If you have any tips on how to best scoop up Millie when doing water changes please let me know. I don't like picking my axolotls up with my hands for fear of hurting them but I haven't found a very smooth way to transfer her yet without doing something of the sort.

I'm so sorry to hear about Millie. I can't offer you any advice but I can say that I've seen gills receding like that when axolotls start to morph. I don't know if that's what's happening.

I used a fish net to move my axie around. I found it safer as i was scared he would slip out of my hands.

Thank you, I'll look into the morph state :( I know axolotls are not meant to morph so I really hope thats not whats happening.

Thank you, do you use a larger fish net than normal? Mine is rather small and I worry that the mesh will hurt her injuries and gills.

It is a small net but it doesn't cause him harm. I only pop him into the net for a few seconds but he is safe and secure.
