does anyone know the scientific name for what is commonly sold in pet stores as "frog moss", that stuff that is sold dry and begins to grow again when re-hydrated?

I believe it is either Leucobryum or a close relative/hybrid of it. I hear the stuff is really messy and often animals will swallow it. I hope that helps.

yeah it helps alot, i ound some for sale in the terrarium supply section of the pet store and wanted to research about it's natural environment, growing, habits, etc, but "frog moss" isnt exactly a term that brings up the most scientific info from google....
