Future Viv Idea

I tried to post this once already but I can't find that it posted so I will give it another shot.
In the future I would like to have a newt .. or a few newts ... maybe salamanders instead? I am thinking something semi aquatic or more terrestrial based that I can build a mossy and fern structured viv for. I would like to get the viv up and going, completely stable and functional before adding a newt or salamander of course. Based on my idea.. what would be some suggestions? Any input is welcome.
*note* it will be weeks if not months before a salamander/newt would be bought so research is something I have ample time for.

Step 1: figure out what you want.

Are you building a tank, and want a critter in it? or do you want a critter and will setup a tank for it?

If you are more interested in keeping the animal, decide what animal you want then figure out what type setup is appropriate.

If you are more interested in tank construction, then build the tank you will enjoy. After you are completed, figure out if anything is is appropriate to live there. But be ready for the fact that you might not make a hospitable environment for something you are interested in keeping.

Once you've done Step 1 we can give suggestions on Step 2.

There are a LOT of options here. The first species that came to mind is T. shanjing, though they need mostly land.

Here are some other possibility's that I thought of.....

T. marmoratus,
T. pygmaeus
T. torosa,
T. granulosa,
N. kaiseri,
I. alpestris,
H. dunni.

This list is just the species i thought could be maintained in a setup like you described. I may have missed some. You can read more on their care on Caudata Culture ( CC ).

I am wanting to essentially build a tank AROUND a critter. I am completely flexible I just want to get a critter that is mostly terrestrial and wont run and hide when someone comes around. I am pretty open to any species at this point and wanted a few ideas to narrow down the playing field since I am new to the newt area. So far all I literally have is a tank, some dirt and a thing of moss, so nothing at all is set in any kind of stone.

Ambystoma tigrinum (tiger salamanders) are great pets, they get used to tier owners, and will eat from your hands and even beg for food, and they don't "run and hide" when someone comes around.
