GAZETTE & HERALD (Wiltshire, UK) 02 July 09 Rare newts thriving in Braydon Forest (Katie Bond)

A rare species of newt has been found thriving in ponds in the Braydon Forest area.

A survey by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust found ten out of 38 ponds in the area were populated by the distinctive great crested newts, which have dark bodies and orange spotted bellies.

Landscapes for Wildlife project officer Paul Darby said: “It seems we have a healthy population of great crested newts in the area, but we still need to restore more ponds to expand their numbers.”

The species of newt has declined recently because of changes to their habitats, but the restoration of ponds under the trust’s Landscapes for Wildlife project is helping to bring them back.

Mr Darby said: “Restoring ponds helps all sorts of other wildlife too, and smooth newts, palmate newts, toads and frogs are all benefiting from the project’s work in the area, along with dragonflies and some birds.”

If you live within the project area and would like more information call the team on (01380) 725670 ext 237 and 299, email pdarby@wiltshirewildlife.org or robertn@wiltshirewildlife.org.
