EVENING TELEGRAPH (Derby, UK) 06 February 08 Technology Lifts Threat to Colony of Rare Newts
A colony of great crested newts at a nature reserve has been saved thanks to the installation of a new sewage treatment plant by a Burton waste company.
The newts, a protected species, were known to be living close to the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust's headquarters on the banks of the Avon, near Coventry.
However it became clear that the septic tank which stored the waste from the visitor centre was nearing the end of its useful life, with the potential risk of pollution to the nature reserve.
The trust called in Burton firm Serious Waste Management to empty the tank and find a solution.
"It wasn't just the problem of disturbing the newts," said David Birkett, managing director of Serious.
"We couldn't install just any sewage treatment plant. It's a sensitive site and we had to find exactly the right equipment. When it's done, no-one will know the system is there - not even the newts."
