SOUTH LONDON NEWS (UK) 12 November 08 Water great find in Brockwell Park
Experts are expected to reveal this week whether an amphibian found by volunteers helping to improve a popular park is a rare great crested newt.
The newt, which was discovered around the pond area of Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, bears all the hallmarks of the protected species.
Lambeth council has sent a picture of the creature, which was found last Sunday, to amphibian experts and is waiting for independent confirmation it is the rare newt.
If it is a great crested newt, the council will have to take special steps to protect the creature and its habitat, which are protected by law.
The great crested newt is Britain’s largest and can grow up to 17cm long from head to tail.
The amphibians – which can live for up to 27 years – are nocturnal and hide on land during the day in burrows or under logs and leaves.
A Lambeth spokesman said: “If great crested newts are present in Brockwell Park, this would be exciting news and add another important species to the increasing list for Lambeth.
“Finding great crested newts doesn’t mean that any park suddenly needs to be managed in a different way, or that any future developments or changes have to stop.
"But it does mean any management and changes have to take account of their presence and minimise disturbance to them.”
