I would like to know if anyone can tell me how to tell the difference between a female and a male Axolotl if they are about 4-5 inches?

You won't be able to definitely tell until they are a bit larger 6"+ & even then sometimes you're convinced someone's a girl & then things literally pop out over night & Betty becomes Bob lol :D

To answer your question -
It's not easy to tell ;)

I agree with Nikki. My guys are just reaching 7-8inches and I'm now able to see who's a male and a female.

Soooo true :D
I always thought my Derpy was a female. Then suddenly, overnight, his cloaca swelled to triple the size and he began nudging the others and leaving spermatophores all over the place :p

Hehe, guess I was wrong. It's why I give my axies gender neutral names :)

*Nodnod* Mine were the same! My 'baby girl' Toothless has suddenly started getting a swollen cloaca so she may be a baby boy after all - she's only just reached 8". Galaxy, who I was sure was acting like a boy - rambunctious, full of energy and cheeky - has only just reached 7" and I still don't see any action in the cloaca area.

>.< Gender neutral names are definetely the way to go! One user on here has an axxie named Audrey who is definetely male but was named as an egg by his previous owner, I was so surprised to read 'he' in the posts"!

Oh it's the old 'I thought he was a girl' thing! You really can't tell until they get to over 6" - mine got to 8" before I realised I had 3 out of the 4 wrong.....

I had 2 males and a female for a year and a half, and then one morning I had 3 males and a whole tank full of spermatophores. He was just a late bloomer.
