Genetics? Has anyone had all one type of axolotl morphs die, while the rest are thriving?

I have hatched a clutch of eggs from a Leucistic and a black Melanoid (not related). They're 2 months old now, and since the time of hatching, most of my dark babies have died off. They will be completely fine, then stop eating, then dead. It has to be something with their genetics, right?

I put this little guy in with the bigger ones only temporarily, just to show the difference.

Hi,
The smaller one seems not to have eaten anything while other obviously did.

Before speaking of genetics, can you evaluate the percentage of small dark ones (including those already dead) ?

I've attached a interesting bit of reading that might be of some use in the future.

I have 102 that are light colored, and haven't lost a single one of them. I have lost 14 dark ones, and only have one left. The last one I lost was a larger one, belly still full of brine shrimp and white worms. He surprised me, because he seemed to be completely healthy.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
