Gill problem

when we got our newest axie he was missing a gill. it was a stump, he liked to scratch it and ended up scratching down to the bass of his head... he was calm for a few days now he seems to be scratching his lower 2 gills. his middle gill seems to be rotting (or fungus) and blood has come to the surface of his skin. the gills on the other side are fine and he is perfect healthy as he is regularly eating and not showing any signs of stress. His gills are backwards, his tail is not rounded and there is no stress spots.
i was wondering if it will be best to give him salt baths or leave it and let him take care of it.
there is another axie in the tank with him who is fine, water temp and all chemical levels are fine.

sounds like parasites to me. i would take the axie out of the tank and give him a salt bath for the fungus. can you see anything strange on his gills?. if it is parasites then you will probably have to clean out the whole tank and keep the two axies seperated from each other to prevent the healthy axie from catching the parasites. could u get a close up picture of the gills by any chance?.

okay... we've started the salt baths, we'll see how that goes.
thanks for your help.
we'll try post pictures soon

okay these are a few pics.. its not the best quality but it's the best we could do.
