so my mudkip had a temporary roommate for a bit, and before having this roommate her gills looked like;

now she has a gill stalk that is much shorter than it was before, pictured here;

in the picture you can’t tell, but it does have a bit on the tip that is white. i’ve studied it for a while and know fairly confidently that it’s not fungus, so i’m wondering if her friend may have bitten it off?

any answers or suggestions appreciated!!

Yes her room mate nipped her gills but luckily you caught in time before it got worse. Luckily as long as you keep them apart as well as frequent water changes your mudkip can regrow it back.

I can see see what you are talking about if you don't mind me asking how long was your axolotl being housed with the other?

her cycle crashed so they were together for literally less than 24 hours, i always kept boba seperate from everyone else because she has quite the reputation, however i had lent my tubs to a friend and needed a place for her to stay for the moment. ergo, roommates.
my lovely boba has since been rehomed, as three separate tanks (20gal long) was a bit much to keep up with, especially considering boba and jello just loved to walk through their waste and scatter it everywhere. but they’re in a great home now, possibly better than mine as i have school, work, and my second job to keep up with. they’re doing wonderfully - i have a post somewhere explaining what they had gone through (warning, it’s awful and upsetting)
anyways - all in all it’ll never happen again, unless i get a male and breed and he’s for some reason aggressive - but they’ll be together for only a few days anyways

I totally get it and I just finished reading your other post and it's terrible someone can treat them the way they have been treated. Just wanted to get a time frame for myself so I asked and appreciate how open you were. I couldn't help but to laugh at having a reputation 🤣 😂. I'm glad they were able to get rehomed. In no way did I have my judgy pants on but found this very interesting as well as something to keep on the fore front of my mind and a time frame. Thank you for sharing and im sure her fluffy gills will be just as glorious as before.
