Im new to keeping Axolotls & loving them.
But its just a question about my green Axolotl. It appears to have patches of almost grey looking mould stuff (like you get mould on bread) on its sides. And appears to be getting worse since ive had him. Looking at pics on line, this appears on many of the green axolotls ive looked at. Is it normal ?
Or will the 10 min. salt bath solution (2 teaspoons per 2 pints) clear if up. Cheers if you can give me some help. Thank you.

Sounds like fungus to me! I have no experience with fungus but you better post a pic up so those in the know can diagnose the problem for you!

Also never had to do a salt bath but 2 tsp per 2pints may be abit much salt are you sure you dont meen litres? (im unsure myself!) Im sure some one with experience can help you with this also!

We will need pics, water parameters and tank temperature for people to further understand the problem so please post them all asap so we can help you and your axie out!

best to post a picture :) that way people can see what you are on about xxxx

I hope ive done this right with the pic. (new to this posting stuff you see). The salt levels are on the weaker side to the ones recommended on this site.

Oooh looks nasty, looks fungusy to me how long has he been like this? looks like alot ive only ever seen little patches whats the tank temp like? a high tank temp may have contributed to the spread of this fungus stuff. Unfortuantly Im not really experienced enough to help you with this so will leave it to the pros! Hopefully someone will get back to you asap with correct instruction on what steps to take!

I Hope all goes well, il keep an eye on this thread to see how your little guy is doing so keep us posted with pics on his progress.

Hope someone can help you soon!

Edit: some pictures ive seen of axies suffering from heat stress have whitish patches on them so could be something to do with that?! what is your tank temp? ideally your lookin between 16 and 18degrees around the 20deg mark is only suitable for short periods and 24deg + would surely kill an axolotl I know how hard its been keeping tanks cool over the last few weeks its been soo warm! my tank would have hit 25deg + if i diddnt take steps to keep it cool!

With this warm weather its been very hard to keep the temp. down on the tank.
Mainly around the 21 - 21.5 c. (warmer than id like). Ive been cycling the frozen pop bottles to try to keep the temp. down.

yeah mines been hovering around 20-21 its been a bugger keeping them cool! at least youve been doing what you can to keep the temp down!

This is strange usually loads of people jump in to help a poorly axolotl, are we the only people online? haha!

Im guessing you are just waiting for confirmation that a salt bath is the way to go on this one, Hang in there, Someone is bound to help soon!

He seems quite happy in its self.
Tried meal worms today (him not me !).Seemed to enjoy them very much.
I bought 2 Axolotls at the same time. The other,a Leucistic, seems fine.

It doesn't look like regular fungus to me.

Has the salt bath helped at all?

Mel

Only the 2nd night ive done it. So it maybe a little early to tell. And like i say, im using a weaker salt sol. at the moment. Until some recommends otherwise.

Usually with fungus and salt baths i tend to see an improvement straight away.

I think your right doing a weaker dose.

Does it look cotton wooley?
It looks more like mould to me. If i'm seeing it right.
Is it the circle patches.

Mel

Yes it was in circular patches on his face yesturday. But this has cleared after the bath.

I would continue with what your doing for now.
Someone who has seen this before might be able to help. But if it looks a bit better (and there are no open wounds) I would do what your doing.

Let us know how he goes on.

Mel

I went back to shop i purchased them from today. Just to pick up some mealworms. I looked at their other stock. And the other green Axolotl also showed signs of it to a lesser degree.

Hmm...
Hopefully it will clear up.
I would start having a look round for vets who can treat axolotls though just in case.

Mel

I forgot to say, if that axie hasn't been seperated from the other i would do, just in case.

Mel

Just an FYI.... Mealworms are a poor choice for food. You need to get them eating Earthworms. Mealworms aren't very nutritious and have a lot of chiten in their exoskeletons, which is poorly digested. I'd use earthworms, waxworms, bloodworms, Salmon Pellets instead of mealworms.

Poor if it were the only thing i was feeding them.
I have a few diff. types of food cheers.

Poor, but recommended as a treat (not a complete food) elsewhere on this site.
And like i say,not the only food .:p
