Hi Everyone, ive been keeping axolotls for some time now. ive been feeding them guppies every now and then i put in a couple of guppy fry (i have a different tank for my breeding guppies)
I did;nt take my axolotls to work out they are easy food.
But i've just been told by another member that guppies should not be with axolotls.
Am i in the wrong here in feeding my guys guppies?

Plus ive also been told to feed my axies Prawns which i aways thought these are bad for them due to the bactirca they contain.

Sorry for the weird questions but if im feeding them wrongly i need to know.

Does anyone else use guppies as feeder foods

Cheers

If you've never had problems with guppies i wouldn't worry.
You just need to make sure the guppies arn't bothering the axolotls gills.

Prawns arn't great.

Earthworms are the best food.

Hi. :)

I also use guppies every now and then as food i only have 2 left in my tank my axies got the rest,
I wont be replacing the guppies when they are gone.

And on the Prawns i too thought they wore a no no and never fed them to any of my axies.

But then what do i know? As ive been told by another member that i'm doing everything wrong with my axies, keeping them too clean if that can really happen, very upsetting :(

Hi
Thank you both for the fast reply.
to be truthful the guppies stay at the top of of the axies way i only use guppy fry they are tiny.
One of my axies play dead a floats so when the fry gets close the axies grab it,
If i saw one of the guppies attacking their gills i would stop using them.
My axies do get earthworms which they love its only on and then i use guppy fry.

When my guppy tank gets over run i tend to use them on my axies.

I didn't think Prawns wore great glad i stayed away from them :D

Thank you

Sounds like your doing everything right :D

Hey Steph

Who said, you was doing everything wrong with your axies? I've seen your beauitful axies and trust me your doing nothing wrong :D

Dont listen to them and how can you keep them to clean are they real?

You know maybe im doing that as well.

I clean out my tanks out maybe every 5/6 months because the sand looks really bad when i feed them pellets. pellets can be hard to remove and do smell out the sand after a while, so its easy to put my guys in another tank while i clean their tank out.

And i'm sure there is alot of us out there that do the same thing,

I wouldn't worry about it your axies are stunning.

P.S how your little man doing? hope his hand is getting better

Thank you Skip.

Yes it is because i too clean out my tank.

Mickeys hand is doing great you cant really see it now, will be up to you very soon

Like i said Steph don't listen to her.

Thats great on Mickeys hand I've been so worried about him

bless his little cotton socks (to quote my nanna)

:D:D Cheers Skip :D:D

You can still always make me smile :D

Keeping them too clean would only be an issue if you suddenly decided to stop doing it IMO
The cycle may take a whack if you left them unclean.

Dont worry

Mel

Thank you

She made me feel like i was going a little OCD, with them

I know this thread is a bit old, but since this is a common question, I wanted to share my experiences. I have two Axolotls in a 40 gallon tank. I have bought worms, but since I work 24-48 hours at a time, feeding them can be inconvenient.

I decided to fill the tank with 50 guppies, 50 minnows and 50 ghost shrimp. It was the best decision I made. The guppies, minnows, and the shrimp don't bother the Axolotls and they provide an excellent food source at the Axolotl's leisure. Both are dirt cheap, and they last longer than you'd expect. I suppose replacing them every two weeks may be too expensive for some, but for me, it has worked out great. I haven't had to hand feed my Axolotls in 3 months.

The minnows are their favorite though.
