For over i year i had my ensicauda from juveniles i thought i have two females... After two weeks on land i put the pair in water an my male started to fan his tail. Some weeks after this i have finally a newt with a tail sheen! I think he looks beautiful with it and i count for bigger tail sheen next season. Sorry 'bout the dirt in the tank

PS i think his blue eyes suit with tail sheen

Spectacular! Some moments ago I was trying to photograph my ensicauda popei has well.
I have a similar case to yours too. I have mine with 11 and 12cm and i think both are females, because their cloacas are similar. The bigger haves just a few white dots on dorsal view, instead the slightly smaller haves many white on the dorsal view... they are different subspecies but do you know if popei stay with those colors on the tail?

As long as i know, popei don't posess the tail sheens. I was sexing my newts by looking at their body shape and tail lenght. I have no experience with popei so i can't help you, maybe uploading pics of your newts can help us.

Only for pics i put him into orientalis tank where i have better light. The sheen looks like it's still developing.
