Hello! I’m JazAxolotl, and I joined this website to learn more in preparation for eventually getting my own axolotl.
I have always been interested in amphibians even since I was a young child and would often catch and try to care for frogs in the yard lol.
In recent years I have fell in love with a certain type of salamander, the axolotl of course, and I’m determined to own one.
I have been lurking around this website for a few months now but I decided to finally make an account because I feel I’m ready to start purchasing supplies and starting up my tank, wanted to learn more and ask questions before I do anything big though. After all, it will be my first ever axie.
I’m excited to interact with you guys, this community seems great. Feel free to message me and I am happily accepting any tips or advice in terms of axolotl keeping. Thanks for reading, sorry it’s long, have a good day/night :]

hi! i’m ren, and i’m one of the more active members on the site, mostly on the axolotl threads.
first off, welcome!! super excited to have you here, and even more excited to get to know you :)
next off, what questions do you have? i noticed your other threads, and will reply to them soon, but anything major you want to know right off the bat? i’m always here to help :)
again, so excited to have you here, and looking forward to teaching you all the nerdy axolotl things i never shut up about!

a warm welcome from all of us here at caudata,
- ren

Actually yes, I do have one major question. (Also very excited for your nerdy axolotl things!!!) And thank you for being so welcoming I really appreciate it :]
Okay, so I’m getting a lot of mixed message about water changes.
I’ve read 30% weekly, 15% weekly, 90% weekly and I just don’t know which would be the best.
Also, I’ve watched a few videos, and I’ve noticed some people leave their lotls inside the tank during water changes while others tub them for the duration of the water change. Also don’t know which would be the better option.
Additionally, I’m also getting mixed messages on how to treat the water with a dechlorinator, specifically Seachem Prime.
I’m seeing that some people add it to the water that’s left over after removing some, and I’m also seeing that some people will add it to the new water before adding it into the tank. Also, how would you dose it? Would you put the amount needed for the water you removed or the amount needed total for the tank or the amount needed for what is left over?
I appreciate any insight you may have on this, thanks again :]

alright -
i do 25-30% weekly or biweekly water changes, along with spot cleaning any waste the moment i notice it. i leave mudkip in the tank while i do the water change, as although it is a bit stressful for her, it’s less stressful than me handling her in order to tub her.

as for dechlorinator - i add prime to the new water im putting in the tank

Thanks for the input- just wondering though, do you think these other methods could possibly work too?

i mean, yes, its just not what i personally do— you’ll figure out what feels best for you as you continue to do water changes and such :)

Would it hurt my hurt axolotl if I were to use/experiment with different methods?
