Hi my name is Nick,
I've read, I think, all you could possibly read for a beginner to start an axolotl tank including (but not limited to) temperature, ph, tank setup, filtration, gravel, diseases, food, and more. So here's what I'm going to do before I buy an axolotl. I'm going to clean out my 55 gallon tank and fill it about half way with water... tons of rocks, sand in large pebble gravel, and I'm going to do a canister filter with a spray bar. Since this tank used to be a fish tank should I look out for different kinds of bacteria or anything like that? Can a Axolotl live with a pleco fish? How long do axolotls usually live?
Any words of encouragement? Any local Breeders?

Hi nick, welcome to the site.
I wouldn´t house an axolotl with a plecostomus, since they may suck on your axolot´s skin cusing damge, and since they grow to a fairly big (i´ve seen huge) size the damage could be really serious. Also if the fish was small enough it could be eaten. Glad to hear you did your homework, as for the tank, being a 55gallon one you have lots of room to make a very nice habitat, just make sure any big stones you place in are secured to avoid disasters :) Best of lucks.

Plecos!

See I don't think plecos do that. Its just not in there nature to suck on other living organisms unless its food and usually they aren't carnivorous. I'm going to play it safe and take your word for it. I'll just have to sell them. They are nice size too. damn. lol. Thanks though.

wow thanks. Awesome site. and good info. I can't wait to get this tank going.
