Hi everyone! My name is Darin but you can call me Goose either one works. I'm new to the axlotl family/ownership and was looking to see if anyone had any tips and tricks for me to help me with my journey of preparing to take care of two juvenile axlotls. As of right now they're about 2.5 to 3 inches long. I have not gotten them yet but I am planning to do so soon. I have a 15 gallon tank, de-chlorinated water, some hidey holes, a sponge filter for 15 gallons and an air pump for 20 gallons and have been letting my tank cycle for about 2 weeks so far. My tank is in low lighting and running at about 68 degrees but I'm planning on getting a fan to drop it dwn to the 60-66 degree range that way I won't have to worry about them getting over heated. I'm excited to learn more about axlotls from anyone and everyone. Feel free to comment on this thread if allowed by the moderators, if not just message me directly. I appreciate all the help, tips, and tricks!

Welcome to the group. I belong to a fish club in Madison though I live in Illinois. I have several axolotls. Lots of babies and many species of newt.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
