Hey folks,
Okay, I'm planning a setup for some newts, Notophthalamus v. v. primarily, hopefully another breed or two in the same tank. I am planning no a 70 gallon, so there should be lots of room, so disease and temperament are my only concerns there I believe.

Now, I've never taken care of newts before, And I don't plan no this for a couple months, 1 month to let the tank run, for sure. I could also end up cutting down to a 20 gallon tank.

Now, I don't have a canopy, so taht's my first question, which kind of canopy is best for newts?
I plan on a plain black background, and possibly on the sides, with forest green gravel or royal blue gravel... (big enough I hope, so they don't accidently eat a peice or two)

What I really need help with is a platform area for them to crawl out on, what sort of water filter to use, and methods for heating/coolnig the water... It gets to +40 in summer sometimes, and -40 in winter ever so rarely... (-62 with windchill one really cold day... Oh, that's Celsius, by the way

I'd like to use live plants, any ideas on that?

Anyways, any help you people have would be excellent, I'd love to use a waterfall filter, but i know newts don't like currents, so if it fell on a stack of rocks, would that be okay?

Thanks in advance, folks. I look forward to your advice.

Welcome Joel,
there are several reasons why one shouldn't mix species. You will find background info on this as well as lots of more useful information concerning your questions on Caudata Culture.
Just follow the link on Caudata.org or go straight to http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/articles.shtml.
Good luck with your new newt tank.

Oops, redundant post. Sorry. Scrolled down and saw that others have already pointed you in the right direction.

No harm in reinforcing the point, Ralf.

Yeah, people have told me it's not a great idea to mix species, and after reading those articles, I can definately see why! I think I've settled on Eastern Red Spotted Newts, (Notophthalamus v. viridescens), for now. If I find that another breed in particular will survive well with them, then I might try it down the road, but it's safety first for me.
