Your uncle is very young for such a serious condition. It must be quite a worrying time for you and your family.

As for your axolotls, I've not had to do full water changes on small containers, so I'm really not sure. Looking at the information in the link I would say that picking them up to move them between containers would be safer and less stressful.

When I used to do small tub water changes, I would strain the water out of the container they were in and just pour the axolotl into the new tub.
