Illness/Sickness: Help!! Axolotl looks like its going to explode !!!

Well I suppose bleeding could occur if he has got some kind of impaction that has shifted and damaged him in the process. It's just a guess though. If this is the case he may pass whatever it is whilst he's in the fridge. They can survive for weeks without food, and fridging slows their metabolism so food will be even less of an issue. Offer him something every day, but don't panic if he doesn't eat it.

I have not found a vet who will deal with axolotls. I tried to offer him a small worm to see if he was respondent to food, he was not. All my other axolotls seem to be happy and acting normal noting out of the ordinary with them. If it is internal bleeding what would it have been caused by and what are the chances of survival without antibiotic injections. I am guessing that if he does not get better or start to have some sort of a food intake he will only last another week or so before he starves to death? Really hope this does not happen though, i am still looking for a vet but i will defiantly send this thread link to some of the vets on caudata to get there expertise.

Hi Michael,

It certainly looks quite nasty I'm afraid - an abscess, tumour or some sort of abdominal (likely gut) catastrophe (e.g. intestinal torsion) could look like that. Almost certainly will need veterinary diagnostics, drugs and possibly surgery I suspect.

I'm afraid all I can really suggest is finding a vet that will look at him, if necessary in consultation with a vet more experienced with axolotls. For all the main possibilities I would consider, none are treatable yourself. If antibiotics are freely available (not sure of the situation in Canada with regards to drugs availability?) you could try them if you're really stuck, but I think they would be unlikely to do anything much on their own.

Here`s and update.

So this morning i checked on Pablo
Good News:

He seems to have pooped a little which i assume is a good thing, the veins on his head and body has gone down alot and his cola is not as open.

Bad news:

the bruise (red on his left side) has got worse it now spreads to a larger area and there is some on the other side of him now. The caudal fine has started to shrivel up on his body but on the tail it seems to be normal.

I hope he recovers,

he looks bruised or at worst he has and internal haemorrhage (hopefully not) if in doubt even some zoos may be able to give advice on what may be going on as they sometimes have herp specialists that may be able to help if you're unable to find a local vet that can. xx

I know you're worried about touching him but it may be worth having a gentle feel around this area to see if he has a blockage of some sort so if you do contact someone you'll be able to confirm any lumps or bumps that are not normally present to give them more background on his condition. xx

I called the one on that list that's says its in Toronto, they want $100 just to look at it and any surgery would be very costly. Going to have to talk to my parents and convince them it is the right thing we should do.

It might be worth phoning around and finding out if they will all charge the same amount. I find it can vary dramatically between surgeries, and sometimes even between different vets within the same practice. Surgery will be expensive wherever you go, but $100 just to look seems very high to me.

Got home from school today and went to check on him, he looked fine in the morning before i left but i just found him upside down with ghost white gills and a very red belly with white wart looking thing with a black center and he was bleeding out of it He is now dead after only 5 years of life. R.I.P Pablo

Thanks for all yours condolences, appreciate it. He was my first axolotl i just wish i knew what exactly happen so i can prevent it from ever happening again.
