Hey everyone,
I have noticed in the last week or so that my albino axolotl, LeRoy, has been throwing up his food. At first I didn't witness him actually vomiting, and thought that it was just poop that had broken down in the water. It started to happen more frequently, and then last night I witnessed him actually throwing up! I feed him about a quarter of a frozen bloodworm cube every other day and then every day about 4 or 5 small Aquadine shrimp pellets that he has always liked!. He doesn't have a problem eating, even though he is throwing up!
He has also been acting very sluggish lately and not himself. I thought maybe the tank water was too warm and switched him to a cooler location, going from about 68 F to 66 F (19-20 C). Thats the best I can do in my apartment
. I do regular water changes about 25-30% twice a week, and have a amphibian filter set on the lowest setting. I know flow isn't an issue, so I have crossed that out as a stressor. Hardly any current and I have plants set up in prime spots for flow deflection.
I had the water tested and they said everything was actually very good for tap water and that the pH matched up with the axolotl range. I took a sample from his tank and a sample from the faucet and they said the tank had a slightly higher amount of ammonia, but nothing dangerous.
P.S. I bought a Mardel in tank ammonia strip that will last for about a month and has various color levels so I can keep an eye on ammonia levels, but they seem normal!
