Hi is there anyone who can help me? My Axie has got an infection on his gills what would be the best course of action, also this has all happened after i found lots of little white flys on the surface
of the water is this connected? any help would be appreciated.

Matt, in order to help, it would be helpful to know what kind of 'infection'. What does it look like?

What are your water parameters? Ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate are the most important. How warm is your water? How long has your tank been set up? Did you cycle the tank?

The little flies are probably harmless. I had a problem with gnats, which are attracted to the water to lay their eggs.

Hi Kaysie it looks like a white blob on one of his gills which has grown over the last few days, it is the size of a pea. The water parameters are Ammonia 0ppm,nitrite 0ppm, nitrate 0.5ppm,temp 19.5c and the tank has been set up for 14 months and he has been in there for 12.

hi matt could you get a pic of the infection on the site, if its a fluffy blob the chances are its fungas, our little roxy tends to get it from time to time and the salt bath treatment works well for her.

cant seem to get a picture to uplaod but will try a salt bath how much salt do u put in? and how long do u keep him in there for?

hi Matt

you would need to use 2 or 3 teaspoons of salt per litre. however this salt cannot be "low sodium" salt. try to bath him/her twice a day, until 2 days after you can no longer see the fungus. keep him/her in there for a max time of 15 minutes, i usually keep them in there for 10, because it can damage skin and gills if kept in there for too long.

good luck with the axie, and let us know how its going.

Alex

As for salt baths, 2-3 teaspoons per liter of either aquarium salt or sea salt. Table salt is not acceptable. The baths should be for no more than 10 minutes, twice a day. This is usually done in conjunction with refrigeration.

hi

my axie had a white cotton wool like ball of stuff on his gill the other day. i watched it go from tiny to the size of a small pea and so used some tweezers and plucked it off. it came off in one go and fraggle is fine, his gills are fine and the fungus stuff is all gone.

maybe not everyone will agree with what i did but it worked.

you must be very very gentle and i didnt yank, fraggle moved his head and it came away. was a bit like jelly out of the water.

hi Shelly

the problem with that is you may have removed all the visible fungus, however in my experience 9/10 times it returns very quickly. the best way is to kill off the fungus, not try to remove it.

having said that, see how it goes, and hope it doesnt come back!

Alex

what we tend to do with our little roxy, is 2 teaspoons per litre twice a day. once the fungus goes we cut it down to one bath a day for the following five days just to help any un-visable wounds heal.

the water he lives in is slightly brakish anyway so hopefully it wont come back. he got it after i came back from 10 days away and over the previous month someone else had been looking after him more than i had so im hoping it was just stress and needing a water change that did it.

after the first 10 days i was away he had scraped his tail and taken a chunk out of it somehow so i think me not being there to look after him stresses him out a bit.

i cant see any white on his gills so im keeping my fingers crossed
