Hi again...

I've gotten a new big tank for my axie 144ltrs...

I've got some apparently washed river sand for substrate. However I think they lied cause my water is sooooo murky and disgusting and there seems to be a fine silt layer over the sand.
Can anyone suggest an efficient way of removing this guck????
Would appreciate your thoughts

well normally when you first add sand the water is murky so thats not a problem becuase it should settle, but i don't know about the silt layer your talking about.

Suzanne, take out the sand and re-wash it. The company didn't lie. It does come pre-washed, but because dust and debre settles on it it must be washed again.

Simply take it out of your tank and re-wash it using either a cloth rice bag, pillow case, or a towel. Wash a little at a time and make sure to wash it until the sand runs clear.

If your tank hasn't been set up that long you can take the water out and put in new fresh water, or see if your filter will take care of the murky water. But the sand will need to be taken out and re-washed.

Hi Rheann & Jordon,

I've been busy washing sand for the last 4 hours and still haven't quite finished...Anyway there was a lot of muck in that sand.
Let that be a lesson to me...Never believe that 'washed' means washed well.

I'm taking all the sand out, rinsing the tank and starting again...Seemed logical since I've only just started setting up the new one.

Thanks again

Hyeeee

Nope haven't cycled yet...knew about though. Waiting on my new u-beaut filter to arrive then I can start the process.

Ta for the reminder

Are you going to use fish to cycle your tank rob? Cause if you are then it might take longer, because my did.

yep iv'e got 4 comets in there, put them in this morning, i thought it was quicker with fish ?
"oh well" learning lots from my mistakes lol
at least my axies are looking healthy in my other tank and thats all i really worry about for now

Using fish does not mean that it takes more or less time. Cycling is a variable process.

Probably the easiest way that I've had speed it up (if you don't feel like buying bacteria/cycle/etc.) is using some water from an already cycled tank.

Yes, using water, substrate or plants from another established tank speeds it up.
