hi! I recently got two axies and after looking at them for a while i now think one is sick. The female is very healthy and perfect looking but the male (wild color) looks really bad. He has a chunk missing from his arm and tissue around it and i can see the bone. The tips of he feet are white and the end of his tail looks like its missing peices and its also alittle white. I cant tell if his other arm is white it looks more liike gray spots, but not all over. the tips of some of his gills are white and his frills seem chewed. Whats wrong? Did he just get bit? or does he have a parasite? I just started this morning giving him salt baths. wat else can i do?

can you post a clear picture ? it might help someone to help you ..

It looks like it could be a skin infection. Do they feel sticky when you handle them. If they feel sticky it's a sign of skin problems. If you're certain their is a problem I'd treat for 5 days with Furan 2.

nope they dont feel sticky they feel slimy

that´s not a problem at all it was just a bite from another axie, just keep an eye for fungus.

so it will heal and be normal again? Even if its down to the bone?

Lauren, if they are bites, they will heal. However, with any open wounds, you need to be mindful of infections. If your axolotl does get an infection, it could be very bad.

I would isolate it until it heals. If it starts getting fungus, definately do salt baths.

what exactly do you mean by isolate? Like get a tank divider and seperate them or put him in a seperate tank all together.....and for how long?and what if it seems like its not getting better?

Put him in a seperate container. It will need to be isolated until the wounds start to heal over. If it's not getting better, then you should do mild salt baths. The wounds won't heal overnight. Once they start to look like skin is growing back, even if it's not completely regenerated, then it can go back in the other tank.

However, you should take care of the main problem, which is aggression in your tank. How big is your tank? Are you feeding enough? These could be underlying causes of aggression.

ok...I dont have another tank right now, but ive seen them put axies in plastic storage containers. Is that ok? and if I do that does he need a air pump and how often should i do water changes? Right now i'm doing 4 cups of water and two teaspoons of salt for 10 minutes once a day...is that too much?

As for the feeding I feed salmon pellets individually to each axie with a tweezer every other day which is usually how often they are hungry. My tank is a 33 gallon with some rocks and a filter and air pump. There are no plants or tubes.....is that why they are fighting? I hope not. Sorry about all the questions but i am really confused and i am am very new to this

Do u feed them anything other than salmon pellets? If they are only getting pellets, try varying their diet with earthworms, beef heart/ox liver (occasional treats). Also, how old or large are your axies? By tubes do you mean cave/place for them to hide? We only have plants in one of our tanks but we have separate caves (pvc tubes - some people also use terracotta clay pots) for each axie for them to hide in.

plastic stoarge containers are fine. as long as the water is cool it should be fine without a airstone but you can pop one in if you like as long as it isnt too strong. in the container he will need daily water changes of 100% with dechlorinated water of the same temp.

your tank is a good size for two. i have seen mine snap at each other randomly and while they have never done damage i think its very possible they could and it may be what happened in your case. if you can put a few hiding spots or natural 'dividers' like pots, plants, driftwood etc it will make it harder for them to run into each other.

okay i think i'll try that. Can someone please tell me what the ideal setup and food is?

for example: rocks, floating plants, tubes Etc.
and

salmon pelltets, worms,daphnia

(with the food i mean everthing i should feed in one feeding session)

one more question about food....how real do you guys believe the risk is with feeding tubifex worms and earth worms as far as disease goes? I read that those can carry disease

really? i thought they only needed 6-7 inches of water....enough to cover them and then a cuople inches more....is that wrong?

just seperated them...the male is in another container. this stuff is so weird looking....it looks like a puffy pink bite but now i see theres one on his toe too...and his gills seem to be disappaering.
